Based on the web novel literally translated as “Children’s Day in Ninth Grade,” the drama follows the unlikely connection between He Chu San (He Chang Xi), a principled college student, and Xia Liu Yi (He Yan Zhao), a notorious gangster with a violent past. As their worlds collide under dangerous circumstances, the series unfolds a story that is as intense as it is emotionally compelling. Here are five reasons why you should check out this BL.

Interesting action-noir plotline

Even though “Sammy’s Children’s Day” is a BL (short for Boys’ Love), the drama defies expectations by delivering an intense, action-heavy noir storyline that, rather than overshadowing the romance, actually heightens it.

The story begins with a comedic setup: Xia Liu Yi, the right-hand man to one of the most powerful gang leaders in town, kidnaps He Chu San. Not because He Chu San owes him money, nor because he witnessed a crime, but for a surprisingly absurd reason. Xia Liu Yi is producing a movie for his boss and needs a scriptwriter. Naturally, he decides the best candidate is the only man in the city who got into college.

The only problem? He Chu San is a finance major who knows nothing about scriptwriting. Still, after witnessing Xia Liu Yi casually chop off another man’s fingers, he reluctantly agrees to help.

Soon after this comedic exposition, the story takes a sharp turn.

Xia Liu Yi’s boss, who is also his brother-in-law, and his sister are murdered. Xia Liu Yi becomes the prime suspect, turning most of his own gang against him. From this point on, the narrative shifts into a survival story, with Xia Liu Yi fighting to stay alive, while his relationship with He Chu San develops quietly in the background.

In a different story, such a heavy noir plot might overwhelm the romance and make it feel out of place. However, “Sammy’s Children’s Day” balances both elements seamlessly, with the tenderness between the two leads cutting through the story’s darker, grimmer moments.

Longer, fast-paced episodes

While BL as a genre has become increasingly mainstream in recent years, one persistent issue is runtime. Many BL dramas, particularly outside of Thai and Taiwanese productions, suffer from short episodes, with some Korean BLs running as little as 15 minutes per episode.

From the beginning, He Chu San is shown to be drawn to Xia Liu Yi, but even by the midpoint of the drama, neither fully understands nor acknowledges their feelings.

This slow build creates a strong sense of anticipation, making the eventual emotional payoff all the more satisfying.

Complex main and side characters

The central dynamic between a gangster and a college student may sound tropey at first glance and could easily be dismissed as a commercially driven choice. However, “Sammy’s Children’s Day” avoids this pitfall.

Despite having only nine episodes, both main characters are well-developed and feel fully realized, each with their own struggles, motivations, and quirks.

At its core, the story is about He Chu San, a diligent scholarship student, and his unexpected entanglement with Xia Liu Yi. However, the events that repeatedly bring them together are largely driven by the decisions of those around them. The supporting characters are equally fleshed out, with their own arcs and motivations, making the drama feel richer and more expansive than a simple love story.

Wong Kar Wai’s influence

“Sammy’s Children’s Day” carries a romantic, almost nostalgic melancholy that strongly recalls the work of Wong Kar Wai, particularly films like “Chungking Express.”

While the drama is far from a direct stylistic replica and its cinematography isn’t flawless, the influence is clear. Certain scenes, especially those set on the streets, feel chaotic yet vibrant, capturing a sense of urban isolation and emotional intensity.

Although the color grading could have been more refined, the series succeeds in delivering a moody, melancholic aesthetic that complements its themes.

On April 7, the production team behind KBS’s upcoming variety show “Happy Together—Glad I’m Not Alone” (literal translation) announced, “‘Happy Together’ is returning to viewers for the first time in six years with a new concept. Yoo Jae Suk, the longtime anchor of ‘Happy Together,’ will serve as the main MC, and the first broadcast is scheduled for July.”

“Happy Together” is a variety program that aired for a full 20 years—from 2001 to 2020—establishing itself as a brand in its own right. Combining witty talk with a wide range of variety-show elements and presenting multiple formats over the years, “Happy Together” received tremendous love for creating iconic segments such as “Backpack Talk,” “Tray Karaoke,” “Friends,” “Sauna Talk,” and “Late-Night Snack Bar.”

Returning after six years, the program is coming back this time as “Happy Together—Glad I’m Not Alone.” It is being billed as the first-ever storytelling music audition designed to prove “the reason to sing together.”

It is a “team-based audition” that anyone can apply for regardless of age, genre, or eligibility restrictions—as long as they are not alone, the number of members does not matter. A campus romantic-comedy set in the late 1990s, “Green Light” follows the story of a man, who only knows baseball, as he enters law school in order to meet his first love. The drama will capture the heart-fluttering vibes of first love and youth.

Choi Hyun Wook has reportedly been offered the role of Han Tae Young, a first-year law student who was formerly one of the best high school baseball pitcher. On top of the mound, he is more passionate and confident than anyone else, but in front of love, he is a pure-hearted youth who only knows how to be straightforward. He is a figure who willingly turns his life around for his first love.

As a former baseball athlete himself, Choi Hyun Wook was a pitcher on the winning team of the 2017 National Junior High School Baseball Championship, but he quit baseball following an injury in the first year of high school.

Jung Chaeyeon will be reportedly taking on the role of second-year law student Song Ji Woo. Although she appears bright and firm, she harbors wounds and secrets that she can not easily tell anyone else. Through her reunion with Han Tae Young, she faces long-buried feelings once more, causing her time to start moving again.

The drama will be helmed by director Kim Moon Gyo of “Trolley” and “Connection” and written by writer Yeo Song Eun of “Good Good” Season 5.

Circle Chart (formerly known as Gaon Chart) has revealed its chart rankings for the week of March 22 to 28!

Album Chart

BTS achieved a quintuple crown on this week’s Circle charts, topping no less than five separate charts. In addition to remaining No. 1 on the physical album chart, digital download chart, and social chart, the group also claimed the top spots on the overall digital chart and global K-pop chart.

BTS’s new album “ARIRANG” took two of the top three spots on this week’s physical album chart: the regular version of the album held onto its spot at No. 1, while the Weverse version charted separately at No. 3.

ITZY’s Yuna’s solo debut mini album “Ice Cream” entered the chart at No. 2, while SF9’s special album “About Love” debuted at No. 4.

Finally, VERIVERY’s Kangmin’s solo debut single album “Free Falling” rounded out the top five for the week.

Overall Digital Chart

BTS’s latest title track “SWIM” shot to No. 1 on this week’s overall digital chart, while their B-side “Body to Body” jumped 13 ranks to No. 4.

Hearts2Hearts’ “RUDE!” stayed strong at No. 2, trailed by KiiiKiii’s “404 (New Era)” at No. 3.

Finally, IVE’s “BANG BANG” rounded out this week’s top five.

Streaming Chart

Hearts2Hearts’ “RUDE!” continued its reign at No. 1 on the streaming chart for the third week in a row, while KiiiKiii’s “404 (New Era)” maintained its position at No. 2.

BTS’s “SWIM” rose 40 ranks to take No. 3 for the week, followed by IVE’s “BANG BANG” at No. 4 and HANRORO’s “Landing in Love” at No. 5.

BLACKPINK’s Jennie and Tame Impala are soaring to new heights on Billboard’s Hot 100 with their hit remix of “Dracula”!

On April 7 local time, Billboard revealed that Jennie and Tame Impala’s collab version of “Dracula” had risen to a new peak of No. 18 on the Hot 100, Billboard’s weekly ranking of the most popular songs in the United States.

The song is currently both Jennie’s and Tame Impala’s highest-ranking song to date on the Hot 100. Before “Dracula,” Jennie’s highest-ranking solo song on the chart was her The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp collab “One of the Girls” (which peaked at No. 51).

“Dracula” also jumped to a new peak of No. 4 on both Billboard’s Global 200 and Global Excl. U.S. chart this week, in addition to rising to No. 12 on the Streaming Songs chart and debuting at No. 14 on the Digital Song Sales chart.

The Korean Business Research Institute has revealed this month’s brand reputation rankings for rising singers!

The rankings were determined through an analysis of various rising singers’ media coverage, consumer participation, interaction, and community awareness indexes, using big data collected from March 1 to March 31.

WOODZ (Cho Seung Youn) continued his reign at the top of the list this month with a brand reputation index of 2,617,028, marking a 0.23 percent rise in his score since last month.

Trot singer Kim Yong Bin also held onto his spot at second place with a brand reputation index of 2,528,551, marking a 3.30 percent increase in his score.

Stray Kids came in at a close third with a brand reputation index of 2,481,162, marking a 16.79 percent rise in their score since last month.

KiiiKiii jumped to fourth place with a brand reputation index of 2,128,902, while Park Ji Hyeon rounded out the top five with a score of 1,987,791.

Last week, BTS topped nine different Billboard charts—including the Billboard 200, Hot 100, Artist 100, and both global charts—after “ARIRANG” achieved the biggest week of any album by a Korean artist in the United States.

On April 7 local time, Billboard revealed that BTS had topped no less than six Billboard charts for a second consecutive week. As previously announced on Sunday, “ARIRANG” remained No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and the Top Album Sales chart, meaning it was once again the best-selling album of the week in the United States.

BTS’s title track “SWIM” also continued its reign at No. 1 on Billboard’s Digital Song Sales chart, meaning it remained the best-selling song of the week in the United States for a second week. Meanwhile, BTS held onto their spot at No. 1 on Billboard’s Artist 100, marking their 344th non-consecutive week on the chart.

Additionally, BTS became the first Asian artist ever to simultaneously chart 10 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 for more than one week. After debuting 13 tracks from “ARIRANG” on the Hot 100 last week, BTS once again landed 10 songs on the chart this week.

“SWIM,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Hot 100 last week, stayed strong at No. 2 this week, followed by “Body to Body” at No. 42, “Hooligan” at No. 64, “NORMAL” at No. 73, “FYA” at No. 74, “2.0” at No. 75, “Aliens” at No. 84, “Like Animals” at No. 90, “they don’t know ‘bout us” at No. 94, and “Merry Go Round” at No. 96.

“Climax” follows the gripping survival story of prosecutor Bang Tae Seop (Ju Ji Hoon), who plunges into a power-driven cartel in his quest to climb South Korea’s hierarchy of power.

In Episode 8, set against a razor-thin race ahead of the general election, Bang Tae Seop joins hands with Kwon Jong Uk (Oh Jung Se) to launch a counterattack targeting Lee Yang Mi (Cha Joo Young).

Chae Won Bin has shared her thoughts on her upcoming drama “Sold Out on You”!

“Sold Out on You” is a romantic comedy about the unexpected love story between Matthew Lee (Ahn Hyo Seop), a perfectionist farmer juggling multiple jobs, and Dam Ye Jin (Chae Won Bin), a top home shopping show host who suffers from severe insomnia.

Chae Won Bin plays top home shopping host Dam Ye Jin, who has reached cumulative sales of 1 trillion won (approximately $662,296,000). She is a home shopping star who continues to sell out products with her dazzling speech and charming personality, no matter the broadcast time or format. At the same time, she is a workaholic, so dedicated to her job that she suffers from severe insomnia.

Through this project, Chae Won Bin takes on her first romantic comedy. She said, “I’m nervous about trying a new genre, but I’m also excited to see what I’ll learn and experience. I really prepared diligently.”

She added, “Dam Ye Jin is a lovable and heartfelt character. When I’m around her, I want to say, ‘You’re doing well. I’m proud of you,’ but at the same time, I also want to scold her. That mix of feelings makes her seem like myself and like a close friend, which makes me feel even closer to her.”

“We Are All Trying Here” has unveiled a new poster!

“We Are All Trying Here” tells the story of Hwang Dong Man (Koo Kyo Hwan), who, surrounded by successful friends, believes he is the only one whose life isn’t working out. Consumed by anguish, envy, and jealousy, he sets out on a journey in search of peace.

The newly released poster captures the perspective of Byun Eun Ah (Go Youn Jung), a planning PD at Choi Film. Known in the industry as the “Axe PD” for her sharp script critiques, she is highly capable but hides an inner struggle as she battles trauma. When faced with emotional overload or extreme stress, her condition manifests physically—through nosebleeds.

At the end of her gaze stands Hwang Dong Man, who has spent 20 years dreaming of becoming a film director. Whenever Hwang Dong Man is overwhelmed by anxiety and inferiority, he masks it by talking endlessly. While those around him tend to dismiss his behavior as exhausting or bothersome, Byun Eun Ah sees him differently. Sure, the straightforward good guys have their time and place, but some of the most intriguing characters are the ones who color outside the lines. There’s just something special about characters who don’t fit neatly into the “hero” or “villain” labels that makes a drama way more interesting.

Think flawed anti‑heroes, morally questionable rule-breakers, characters who let their dark pasts take the steering wheel, and rehabilitated bad guys with a good heart. These are five K-dramas with some of the best characters who thrive in the gray.

Warning: light spoilers ahead!

1. “Lawless Lawyer”

In “Lawless Lawyer,” a rule-bending lawyer and a strong-willed attorney who isn’t afraid to throw a punch join forces to take down the bad guys running their hometown.

Bong Sang Pil (Lee Joon Gi) is a lawyer who everyone says seems more like a gangster, and they aren’t wrong. Legally, he’s certainly a lawyer, but he also gets into dark alley brawls and has a loyal support team made up of thugs.

Sang Pil grew up around gangsters after losing his mother young, but he never let go of his promise to her to become a lawyer and fight with the law; he’s just gotten very creative with it. He’s a firm supporter of taking advantage of the law to punish those who’ve broken it, and he has a keen instinct for figuring out who the bad guy really is.

When Sang Pil returns to his hometown, he starts his own law firm with his right-hand man and a bunch of rehabilitated gangsters he’s taken under his wing.

At the same time that Sang Pil returns home, so does Ha Jae Yi (Seo Yea Ji). Jae Yi is a recently suspended lawyer who is fed up with the way the legal system has failed her clients, especially women.

With Sang Pil ready to start checking off the names on his personal corruption hit-list and Jae Yi eager to serve some real justice, the two team up to take back their hometown.

It’s two misfit lawyers against the powerful people who control the law, and the corruption goes all the way to the top.

Why it’s worth the watch:
Sang Pil isn’t afraid of using loopholes, a little intimidation, clever tricks, and his fighting skills to seek justice. He’s not really a villain, but he’s also not the noble, upright lawyer archetype you might imagine. His whole character arc is about using the faulty legal system against people who abuse it, which definitely gives anti‑hero energy.

2. “The Devil Judge”

In the dystopian legal thriller “The Devil Judge,” society is at a breaking point. When a justice-seeking rookie judge joins a new live court program run by the city’s celebrity judge, the two must choose between being allies or enemies.

Kang Yo Han (Ji Sung) is an elite judge who’s treated like a star by the people. He’s the face of Korea’s first Live Court, a televised trial system where all citizens, regardless of status, can watch cases unfold in real time and vote on the verdict.

It’s marketed as a way to make justice more transparent and accessible, but not everyone buys into the idea. Kim Ga On (Park Jinyoung) is one of those people, and he has a front row seat on the inside.

Ga On is a young newbie judge from the “slums” of Seoul who is taking on the position of associate judge beside Yo Han himself. Ga On is skeptical of the flashy new court system that feels oddly like an entertainment program, and he suspects there’s more to Yo Han beyond his perfect exterior.

As everyone’s attention turns to the Live Court, Ga On is set on figuring out what kind of person Yo Han really is, but Yo Han is extremely clever and always one step ahead. Despite their contrasting views on justice and the law, Yo Han sees the potential in Ga On and is set on taking him under his wing, but Ga On is set on proving Yo Han wrong.

Why it’s worth the watch:
In “The Devil Judge,” telling the heroes from the villains isn’t straightforward at all, and that’s what makes it such an addictive drama to watch. Is the court system run by Yo Han cruel and unusual, or is it exactly what society needs to wake up to what is happening around them? Yo Han is the morally gray character that takes the spotlight, but there are plenty to go around in this K-drama.

3. “I Remember You”

In “I Remember You,” a man named Lee Hyun (Seo In Guk) is haunted by the idea that his father once feared he might become a monster.

When Lee Hyun was young, a violent incident tore his family apart: his father was murdered in their home, and his younger brother vanished that same night. The case was tied to a psychopathic patient Lee Hyun’s father had been researching at the time, but he too has since disappeared.

Years later, Lee Hyun has built a life abroad as a genius criminal profiler and professor, with Sherlock‑level instincts when it comes to reading crime scenes and understanding how a criminal mind works.

But his past sneaks up on him when he receives an anonymous email that leads him back to a crime scene in Korea.

Here he meets Cha Ji An (Jang Nara), a cop on the special investigations team with a link to Lee Hyun’s past. Given his expertise, Lee Hyun ends up working as a consultant for the team.

As he digs into new cases, Lee Hyun starts noticing details that tie directly back to his missing brother and the man who murdered his father. Along the way, he gets to know the town coroner (Choi Won Young) and a crafty lawyer (Park Bo Gum) who seems to represent all the suspects connected to his investigations.

Things also take another turn: Lee Hyun gets wrapped up in another murder, and he changes from consultant to suspect.

Why it’s worth the watch:
Alternatively known as “Hello, Monster,” this drama might be a throwback to 2015, but it still holds up against newer K-dramas because of its layered story and genuinely complex, interesting characters. It’s a drama that makes you constantly second‑guess who’s actually telling the truth and who the “monster” really is. If you like a drama that makes you go into investigator mode, this is it.

4. “Psychopath Diary”

“Psychopath Diary” is a dark comedy thriller built around one huge mix‑up that leads to a case of mistaken identity. What follows is a hilariously unexpected sequence of events and one very confused man who discovers he is, apparently, a psychopath.

Yook Dong Shik (Yoon Shi Yoon) is an ordinary office worker at Daehan Securities. He’s diligent and kind, but is constantly pushed around by his coworkers and boss. One night, he gets injured, wakes up, and is missing all his core memories, including who he is.

When he finds a diary that was with him during his accident, he thinks it might be a way to help him regain his memory of who he is. However, he finds something terrible inside: gruesome, detailed accounts of murders and entries that prove the writer is a psychopath.

Thinking the diary is his, Dong Shik believes he is a psychopathic serial killer and therefore starts acting like one (or at least trying to).  

The bright side of this scary realization is that it gives Dong Shik a new sense of power and confidence, so when he returns to the office, the coworkers who once bullied him are in for a surprise.

It’s almost perfect timing that right when he returns, a higher-up at work targets Dong Shik, so Dong Shik decides to do what he thinks he has always done: murder the guy.

Meanwhile, the real psychopath isn’t far. Actually, he is just on a different floor.

Son of the company chairman, Seo In Woo (Park Sung Hoon) is a polished, respected director who hides a totally different life. When he starts to notice Dong Shik at the office, he becomes interested in him and the qualities they seem to both share, totally unaware that Dong Shik has found his book and taken on his identity.

Why it’s worth the watch:
If you prefer a side of comedy with your thriller, this is the funniest one of the bunch. This show answers the question: who would win in a fight between a real psychopath and a guy who thinks he’s one? The premise might sound funny, but this show does its creepy thriller moments just as well as its comedy bits. Plus, it might have the most unexpectedly perfect chemistry between two totally different characters.

5. “The Judge from Hell”

In “The Judge from Hell,” Heaven and Hell are real, and the rules and hierarchy involved are nothing to mess with. When Hell’s demon judge, Justitia (Oh Na Ra), makes a mistake she absolutely shouldn’t have, she’s sent to earth with an impossible mission: deliver judgment to 10 remorseless killers, or else.

Justitia is a powerful demon judge responsible for delivering verdicts to souls sent to Hell. She’s also the third heir to Bael (Shin Sung Rok), the director of Hell and the one who oversees her work.

Everything goes sideways when a real‑world judge, Kang Bit Na (Park Shin Hye), is murdered and accidentally sent to Hell to stand before Justitia. Even though Bit Na clearly doesn’t belong there, Justitia still condemns her.

As punishment, Bael orders Justitia to take on Bit Na’s identity on earth and punish 10 killers who end up in Bit Na’s courtroom. The catch: she has to kill them herself and send them straight to Hell.

Now in the human world until she completes her task, she crosses paths with Han Da On (Kim Jae Yeong), a detective in the violent crimes division who is the first to notice there is something a bit off about Bit Na.

Why it’s worth the watch:
“The Judge from Hell” has some of the coolest world-building and mythical characters out there, and it might be one of the most non-conventional and creative takes on a legal K-drama. If you love an unapologetic, strong female lead, Justitia is exactly that, and both Justitia and Da On play complex characters that aren’t exactly good and aren’t exactly bad. Fair warning, though, this show isn’t afraid of showing violence, so keep that in mind.

Hyeri and Na In Woo may be teaming up for a Korean remake of “Caution, Hazardous Wife”!

On April 7, MyDaily reported that Hyeri will play the protagonist Jin Ja Young in the upcoming drama. On the same day, OSEN reported that Na In Woo has also received an offer to star in the series.

In response, Hyeri’s agency stated, “‘Caution, Hazardous Wife’ is one of the projects she is currently reviewing.” Na In Woo’s side has yet to comment.

Based on the 2017 Japanese drama of the same name, the series follows the suspenseful married life of a spy wife in hiding and her husband, a black ops agent from the National Intelligence Service. Though once enemies, the two now live under the same roof while concealing their true identities and intentions.

Hyeri has been offered the role of Jin Ja Young, who enters into marriage as part of her cover. Believing that keeping her neighborhood safe will bring her peace as well, she takes it upon herself to deal with troublemakers before the police arrive. However, her plans are complicated by an unexpected obstacle—her seemingly perfect husband.

Na In Woo is reportedly in talks to play her husband, a National Intelligence Service black ops agent who is also hiding his identity.

Reports of a Korean remake first surfaced in 2023, when Chae Soo Bin was in talks for the lead role. The project has since undergone changes in both its storyline and casting.

The stars of tvN’s “Siren’s Kiss” have shared their final thoughts ahead of tonight’s finale!

“Siren’s Kiss” is a romance thriller that follows inspector Cha Woo Seok (Wi Ha Joon) as he investigates an insurance fraud case involving people who all died after falling in love with Han Seol Ah (Park Min Young), a mesmerizing woman suspected to be at the center of it all. Kim Jung Hyun plays Baek Joon Beom, an enigmatic startup CEO whose identity is shrouded in mystery except for his name and occupation

In the latest broadcast, it was revealed that the source of all the tragedy surrounding Han Seol Ah was her close friend Do Eun Hyuk (Han Jun Woo), shocking viewers. The tension heightened as Cha Woo Seok, who has uncovered the truth, and Do Eun Hyuk, who seeks to eliminate him, began to confront each other. Viewers are now focused on whether Han Seol Ah and Cha Woo Seok can capture the true culprit, Do Eun Hyuk, and break free from the cycle of tragedy. They are also curious to find out why Do Eun Hyuk targeted and killed Han Seol Ah’s romantic partners.

Ahead of the finale, the cast members shared their final goodbyes, thanking viewers for tuning in to the show.

Just as Han Seol Ah and Cha Woo Seok saved each other, I hope the drama can provide some comfort to anyone carrying their own pain. I also want to thank everyone who has loved the drama.”

On April 7, iZE reported that “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” will premiere simultaneously via TVING and tvN on May 11 at 8:50 p.m. KST as the follow-up Monday-Tuesday drama to “Yumi’s Cells 3.” Following the reports, both TVING and tvN confirmed the May 11 premiere date.

Based on a popular web novel and webtoon, “The Legend of Kitchen Soldier” is a military mess hall comedy drama about an army cook who trades his rifle for a kitchen knife and his bullet belt for an apron. Park Ji Hoon, who has recently made great waves in the film industry for his record-breaking film “The King’s Warden,” will be starring as Kang Sung Jae, who gains a reputation as a “problem soldier.” One day, a mysterious Army Cook Quest screen appears before him, unlocking an intriguing new journey.

In addition to Park Ji Hoon, the drama features a star-studded cast including Yoon Kyung Ho, Lee Sang Yi, Jung Woong In, Han Dong Hee, Lee Hong Nae, and more. The drama has reportedly finished filming.
